Spring Greetings from The Forest

Yesterday seemed to be the warmest day we’ve experienced at the ranch so far this year, nearly 70 degrees. In the afternoon, the carefully prepared grave pictured above became the final resting place of a beloved mother and friend; this burial marked the second couple to be reunited in The Forest. The peace in the burial ground is a truly a balm.
This spring brings shifts and growth with several new staff members joining our team as we continue efforts to refine our work systems and collaboration. It’s exciting and important work. This summer we’re looking forward to the liveliness of a bustling campground, Memorial Day Open House at the burial ground, summer camp students, growing gardens, baby goats and our annual summer solstice celebration. Please consider joining us for our next group tour and celebration scheduled for Sunday, June 15 at 2pm. Register here. We’re looking forward to inviting the community to our Memorial Day Open House on Monday, May 26. We will be onsite to visit and picnic with you from 11am-2pm.
We invite you to come up for a self-guided visit to the farm any day of the week, the farm store is open between 11am and 5pm. Remember to follow directions on the website and contributions to The Crest are always welcome from visitors.
Thank you for your ongoing support and shared commitment to land conservation and community building.
With care,
Mary Ann Perry, Sexton

Species Spotlight
Sandhill Cranes

It’s always a delight when the Sandhill Cranes make their seasonal return to Willow-Witt Ranch. The cranes peacefully meander the wet meadows and their unique, rolling call fills the soundscape during their morning flights.
Sandhill Cranes are tall and gray bodied with crimson skin at the crown of their head. Their wingspan can reach 200cm, and their slender legs and neck help them reach a length of 120cm. Their long, straight bills are suited for foraging grains and invertebrates. These cranes usually travel in large flocks, numbering up to the tens of thousands.
Sandhill Cranes mate for life and may reach the age of seven before first breeding. Last year, these cranes spent a full breeding season at the ranch. We’re ecstatic that they’ve returned and graced this landscape again.

Welcome Maura Bobbitt!
We are so excited to have Maura joining our team as an apprentice learning all that she can about running a conservation burial ground. Maura will be with us through August.
Born and raised in San Antonio, TX, Maura began to shift her career towards death rights advocacy in 2020. She now works as a death rights advocate and mortuary scientist-in-training after graduating from San Antonio College’s Mortuary Science program in 2024. Her work is focused on envisioning a future where our death and grief practices can be individually- and community-focused, radically accepting, environmentally-friendly, and divested from capitalist forces.
While working at the Cibolo Center for Conservation, an environmental nonprofit, Maura honed her passion for sustainable land stewardship, regenerative farming practices, and nature-based education. When she learned about the ways our death practices can become part of the conservation of nature, she found her life’s work. Death advocacy brings together her passion for education, environmental conservation, and community action, uniting her varied experience in an array of different fields. In her spare time, Maura enjoys traveling, songwriting, taking long plant walks, and exploring nature with her socially awkward dog, Bill.
